Airedale by Modine launches hybrid chiller to meet evolving AI data center demands

Airedale by Modine has introduced the TurboChill 3+MW, a new air-cooled chiller designed to support next-generation, GPU-powered data centers. The launch reinforces the company's position in providing reliable, energy-efficient cooling as the industry shifts toward higher-temperature and higher-heat-density thermal architectures.

The TurboChill 3+MW is the latest expansion of the TurboChill platform and offers hybrid cooling with an extended free-cooling operating range. This capability reduces the need for mechanical cooling and lowers energy use, while maintaining high reliability under peak thermal loads. The chiller is engineered to operate across a wide range of water temperatures, optimizing performance in varied ambient conditions and supporting diverse data center configurations.

With more than two decades of experience in concurrent free cooling, Airedale emphasized its broader portfolio of solutions, including electronically controlled (EC) fans, inverter-driven pumps, and centrifugal compressors with variable speed control. According to the company, EC fans can be up to 70% more efficient than traditional AC fans under partial load.

Airedale noted that advancements allowing server racks to be cooled with 45°C water have expanded the applicability of free and hybrid cooling, helping reduce Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE). The company’s Cooling System Optimizer manages between two and twenty chillers, integrating free and mechanical cooling to maintain stability and efficiency, particularly in lower ambient temperatures.

“There is speculation that chillers may no longer be required as next‑generation chips are designed to operate at higher temperatures,” said Art Laszlo, Group Vice President of Global Data Centers at Modine. “However, customers continue to demand proven cooling and reliability to protect their investments. Airedale by Modine's TurboChill platform delivers an ideal hybrid solution by maximizing free cooling where conditions allow, while deploying mechanical cooling to manage peak heat loads and the reliability customers expect.”

Laszlo added that alongside chillers, Airedale offers dry coolers, air handling units (AHU), coolant distribution units (CDU), and intelligent controls. The company is also advancing its immersion cooling capabilities to address the increasing power densities of next-generation chips.
