Carrier launches inverter modular water-cooled chillers in Japan

Carrier has launched inverter water-cooled chillers and heat recovery chillers in Japan. The new models build on technologies developed for the company’s Universal Smart X (USX) Series in the Japanese modular chiller market and use inverter-driven DC triple rotary compressors compatible with R32 refrigerant. Carrier said the units are designed to be lightweight and compact to support flexible installation.

According to the company, the series uses the same type of inverter-driven DC triple rotary compressor as its modular chiller USX FIT. Carrier said the new chillers achieve among the lightest weights and smallest installation footprints in their class, allowing transport by standard elevators and supporting installation efficiency in renovation and retrofit projects.

Carrier said the adoption of the DC triple rotary compressor improves energy efficiency and increases capacity to up to 50 HP. The system covers a capacity range from a single module of 30 HP to 16 connected modules totaling 800 HP, for a variety of applications. The chilled water temperature range has been expanded to 3 degrees C to 30 degrees C (37.4 degrees F to 86 degrees F), including applications in food and chemical processing, and the inverter compressor is intended to provide precise temperature control.

The company said the series uses low-GWP R32 refrigerant and is designed to comply with guidelines for mildly flammable refrigerants (GL-17). Carrier also said the paint-free exterior reduces the use of volatile organic compounds. The new series includes a PWM converter as standard for harmonic suppression, while the segmented refrigeration cycle design allows individual modules to be isolated and compressors to be replaced independently.

Carrier added that users covered by Abound HVAC Performance can access 24/7 remote monitoring, including automatic detection of fouling in water heat exchangers and email notifications. As an option, the system can also support variable flow control through external pump control terminals, while integration of water circuit sensors into the module controller is intended to reduce design workload and simplify installation.

“With this new series, we have enhanced our conventional water-cooled chillers by leveraging our modular chiller expertise, delivering high levels of environmental performance, safety, ease of installation, and maintainability,” said Mineo Maruyama, President of Carrier Japan. “By listening closely to on-site needs and addressing real-world challenges, we will continue to deliver solutions that contribute to a more sustainable future.”
