Danfoss Launches New Compressors for Heat Pumps to Reduce Energy Use and Emissions
Danfoss has introduced three new compressors designed for natural and low-GWP refrigerants: the VZN inverter scroll, PSH scroll, and BOCK semi-hermetic reciprocating HGX56 CO2 T. These innovations aim to accelerate the green transition for OEMs by enhancing comfort and industrial heat pump systems.

Kristian Strand, President of Danfoss Commercial Compressors, emphasized the market's shift towards sustainable energy solutions. "Building owners are demanding energy efficiency and accountability from their suppliers, which creates a growing demand for sustainable and energy-efficient technologies. Globally, we are seeing the market shift from gas boilers to heat pumps across multi-family housing or office building projects. Industrial/process heat pumps are also gaining traction and play a central role in decarbonizing industries such as Food & Beverage, Chemicals, or Textiles."

Strand highlighted the flexibility and simplicity of the new compressor lineup, which includes heating capacities from 30kW with the VZN range to 350kW with BOCK compressors. These products are designed to simplify OEM designs, minimize environmental impact, and comply with directives like the European EPBD.

BOCK HGX56 CO2 T:

  • A 6-cylinder semi-hermetic reciprocating compressor ideal for large-capacity heat pumps.
  • Achieves water temperatures up to 90°C.
  • Offers an efficient alternative to Ammonia and synthetic refrigerants.
  • Reduces cost, system complexity, and the number of compressors required for large industrial heat pumps, refrigeration, and district heating systems.
  • Available in most countries, with North American availability expected by early 2025.

PSH Scroll Compressors:

  • Suitable for North American reversible rooftop units and hydronic heat pump systems.
  • Handles higher discharge gas temperature limits.
  • Features liquid, vapor, and wet injection, ensuring year-round comfort with water-supply temperatures up to 65°C/149°F.
  • Optimized for new-generation systems transitioning to lower GWP options like R454B.

VZN Inverter Scroll Compressors:

  • Facilitates heat pump designs for European applications using natural refrigerant R290.
  • Delivers up to 70kW heating capacity in a single-circuit configuration with less than 5kg charge in the circuit.
  • Provides sufficient capacity for 80°C water supply, even in low ambient temperatures.
Danfoss continues to innovate, supporting the green transition with comprehensive solutions. They supply up to 70% of the bill of materials for an air-to-water heat pump and plan to release additional products in 2024, including the MCE 2024 award-winning Alsmart Universal Controller platform and R290-optimized brazed-plate heat exchangers. These advancements aim to meet the rising demand for heat pumps, including residential applications.

Danfoss remains committed to aiding OEMs in designing, building, and optimizing low-energy heat pump applications, fostering a greener future.
