Embraco Launches Atom, Its Most Compact Variable-Speed Compressor

New 2.5 kg model debuts at AWE 2025, aiming to expand access to energy-efficient technology.

Embraco, a brand of Nidec Global Appliance, introduced its most compact variable-speed compressor to date at AWE 2025 in China. Named Embraco Atom, the compressor targets residential refrigeration applications and is positioned to make variable-speed technology more accessible across global markets. The product received the AWE Innovation Award during the event held from March 20 to 23.

Weighing 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) and measuring under 110 mm (4.3 in), Atom is 30% lighter than Embraco’s previous smallest model, the FMS. It is designed for use in single-door refrigerators, beverage coolers, and even premium models, with the goal of accelerating the industry's shift from fixed-speed to variable-speed compressors.

“There is a growing global push for increased energy efficiency, driven by economic, social, and environmental motivations,” said Alberto Casnati, president of Nidec Global Appliance. “The Atom was developed as a global platform to support the widespread adoption of variable-speed technology, and our initial key markets include China, Europe, and India.”

The compressor operates with natural refrigerant R600a and offers a coefficient of performance (COP) of up to 1.90 W/W. According to the company, this enables energy savings of over 25% compared to traditional fixed-speed compressors and compliance with stringent energy regulations worldwide.

Technical Overview

The Atom incorporates several engineering advancements, including a polymeric discharge line replacing the conventional metal tube. This modification helps reduce heat dissipation, vibration, and noise, while contributing to the compressor’s compactness. It also includes a custom ultra-compact inverter, designed to manage speed control and reduce vibration, resulting in up to 5 dB less noise than typical market alternatives.

Casnati highlighted the development challenge: “Making such a small compressor is an engineering challenge. And we are reducing the size without affecting reliability, efficiency, capacity or robustness.”

Sustainability and Application Benefits

Beyond energy performance, the compact form of Atom brings logistics and environmental benefits. Its size allows double the units per pallet, reducing transportation emissions and storage space. For appliance manufacturers, it offers more design flexibility and increased internal volume, which is valuable for applications such as refrigerated drawers or dual-compressor systems.
