Honeywell has introduced a new gas sensor that uses optical non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) technology to detect flammable gases, including methane, propane and butane, in industrial settings. The NDIR Hydrocarbon Gas Sensor is intended to help protect workers and infrastructure in sectors such as mining, oil and gas, petrochemical and plastics manufacturing.
The 4-Series NDIR Hydrocarbon Gas Sensor is designed for integration into fixed and portable gas detectors used by workers in the field, deep underground and inside processing facilities. Honeywell said these detectors require advanced and accurate sensors to alert workers to potential exposure to hazardous gases.
The sensor is designed to operate in harsh conditions, including dust in mines, methane leaks and extreme indoor versus outdoor temperature fluctuations. It also includes an integrated condensation reduction system to clear excess moisture and maintain performance in humid environments and confined spaces such as refineries.
Honeywell said the NDIR sensor offers high poisoning resistance compared with traditional pellistor or catalytic bead sensors, limiting the risk of sensor failure and reducing false positives. The company also said the infrared technology consumes less power than traditional flammable gas sensors, extending operational lifespan and the battery life of portable gas detectors.
