MHI Thermal Systems launches oil-free ETI-N centrifugal chillers in Japan

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Systems, Ltd. (MHI Thermal Systems) has introduced its new magnetic bearing centrifugal chiller series "ETI-N" to the Japanese market. The chillers feature an in-house developed oil-free compressor and use HFO-1233zd(E) refrigerant, aiming to improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

The ETI-N series employs a magnetic bearing compressor that uses magnetic levitation to support the rotating shaft, eliminating the need for a lubrication oil system. This design reduces wear on sliding parts, shortens startup times by removing the oil film formation step, and lowers maintenance requirements by eliminating periodic oil replacements.

Available in small to medium capacities ranging from 150 to 700 refrigeration tons (approx. 527 to 2,460 kW), the ETI-N chillers come with a built-in inverter as standard. According to the company, the series achieves a rated COP of 6.4 and an IPLV of 9.1. The use of the low-GWP, non-flammable refrigerant HFO-1233zd(E) supports compliance with environmental regulations.

MHI Thermal Systems has previously released chiller models using next-generation refrigerants, such as the ETI-Z (2015), GART-ZE/ZEI (2017), and JHT-Y/YI (2022). The new ETI-N expands this lineup to provide more options for various applications, including general and industrial air conditioning, factory processes, and district energy systems.

The company states it will continue to support decarbonization efforts by supplying energy-efficient thermal products aligned with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group’s 2040 carbon neutrality target.
