Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US (METUS) has announced a new line of commercial Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems that will use R-32 refrigerant. The launch, set for early 2026 in select markets, aligns with upcoming U.S. refrigerant regulations under the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act.
R-32, a low-global warming potential (GWP), A2L-classified refrigerant, is expected to become the new standard for VRF systems starting January 1, 2026. METUS stated that the new VRF line supports the industry’s transition toward lower-GWP refrigerants and reflects its commitment to environmental stewardship.
The new systems will include built-in sensors that can detect refrigerant leaks in indoor units and automatically shut off refrigerant flow, aiming to enhance operational safety. METUS also highlighted system improvements in energy efficiency, heating and cooling performance, serviceability, and durability.
According to METUS, the units are designed to deliver higher Integrated Energy Efficiency Ratio (IEER) and Coefficient of Performance (COP) ratings, potentially reducing operational costs and improving year-round comfort across a wider temperature range.
“R-32 offers a balance of efficiency and reduced environmental impact, playing a critical role in the industry’s shift to lower-GWP refrigerants,” said David Archer, Vice President of Commercial Business at METUS.
The company will continue offering VRF products using R-410A refrigerant through the first half of 2026 to support ongoing projects during the transition period.
