technotrans Introduces Advanced Cooling Solution for Rail Transport at InnoTrans

technotrans introduces a state-of-the-art mobile combined device designed to cool both the battery and power electronics of electrically powered rail vehicles at InnoTrans in Berlin. This new system provides a compact and energy-efficient solution with a single central interface. Alongside this, technotrans will also present its established battery cooling system, zeta.rail. Both systems feature the use of natural refrigerant R290 (propane).

The new combined cooling device is engineered to manage the thermal needs of all liquid-cooled components in battery-powered rail vehicles. This device is capable of cooling the traction battery as well as the vehicle’s power electronics, including converters, motors, and inverters. It is suitable for use in a wide array of applications, including purely battery-powered, bi-modal, and tri-modal trains. Customizable versions are available upon request.

This high-efficiency system includes two separate cooling circuits that operate at different, application-specific temperature levels. One circuit provides active cooling for the battery, while the other offers passive cooling for the power electronics. The design ensures that cold air is circulated throughout the entire device, optimizing the generated cooling capacity and boosting energy efficiency. An optional extension for the battery circuit enables additional passive cooling using ambient air in winter, further improving the system’s overall efficiency.

In addition to the new combined device, technotrans will also showcase the zeta.rail series, which is recognized for its energy-efficient operation. The system can autonomously decide whether to cool or heat the batteries, based on the target temperature, thus ensuring a consistent temperature profile.

Both the new combined cooling device and the zeta.rail system are available with the natural refrigerant R290, known for its low Global Warming Potential (GWP) and eco-friendly properties. R290 is also widely used in vehicle air conditioning systems, simplifying refrigerant storage for operators.

technotrans will exhibit these innovations at InnoTrans in Berlin from September 24 to 27, 2024, in Hall 14.1, Stand 300.
