ACES Inaugural Conference

The Africa Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Cooling and Cold Chain (ACES) hosted a series of events from 17 to 19 October 2023, at ACES headquarters at Rubirizi Campus in Kigali, Rwanda.
“The Hot Reality: Living in a +50°C World” is a project led by the Africa Centre for Sustainable Cooling and Cold chain (ACES) and the UK Centre for Sustainable Cooling. It brings together an international group of experts, including the IIR, to explore pathways towards sustainable, resilient, just and equitable adaptation to survive and thrive in a hotter world.

According to Toby Peters, Professor at the University of Birmingham and Heriot Watt University, “Cooling and Cold chain are critical services as vital as potable water and mobility to our ability to function in a fast-warming world”. The event offered a unique opportunity to meet fellow dignitaries and leading experts in the field of food and vaccine cold chain solutions.
The conference has helped to identify gaps in knowledge and research needs which, if addressed, could move the needle globally on making progress towards well-adapted and resilient populations worldwide. The Hot Reality conference follows an ACES forum - open house and partnership discussions on the following:
Activities conducted to date by ACES programme, debate on how to adapt and build societal resilience as a response to extreme temperatures by starting to tackle one of the world’s most pressing ’here and now’ challenges in a warming world,solutions to access sustainable and resilient cooling for all who need it.
