The first Global Cooling Pledge Signatories Focal Points Meeting will take place on 13–14 June 2025 in Bonn, Germany. Co-chaired by Brazil and the United Arab Emirates, the event will focus on advancing implementation strategies and governance structures to meet the pledge’s emissions reduction targets and address extreme heat impacts through sustainable cooling.
Launched at COP28 and reinforced at COP29, the Global Cooling Pledge aims to cut cooling-related emissions by 68% by 2050. It promotes passive cooling design, super-efficient technologies, and climate-friendly refrigerants while prioritizing equitable access in line with the Paris Agreement.
At COP29, ministers adopted the Pledge Progress Report and 2030 Implementation Strategy and announced plans for an Intergovernmental Committee on Cooling. These developments will guide discussions in Bonn, where representatives will agree on the Committee's Terms of Reference, replacing the previous Contact Group, and outline roles for newly introduced "Cool Champions" to promote national engagement.
The meeting will also include technical training to support signatories in strengthening Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), National Cooling Action Plans (NCAPs), and financing mechanisms to address climate adaptation and extreme heat.
“As the host of COP30, we see the Pledge as an opportunity to elevate sustainable cooling in response to extreme heat and ensure it remains a key priority for climate action in both mitigation and adaptation efforts,” said Ana Toni, Vice Minister for Climate Change and Environment of Brazil and CEO of COP30.
Expected outcomes include finalized governance terms, improved technical capacity among national focal points, and enhanced collaboration on sustainable cooling implementation across signatory nations.
