Global researchers presented low-GWP refrigerant studies at TPTPR2025

The 7th Conference on Thermophysical Properties and Transfer Processes of Refrigerants (TPTPR2025) took place from 15 to 18 June 2025 at the University of Maryland, USA, bringing together 90 participants from around the world. Hosted by the Center for Environmental Energy Engineering (CEEE), the event featured 42 technical presentations focused on low-GWP refrigerants and innovative heat transfer mechanisms.

The conference addressed the growing need for sustainable refrigeration solutions amid tightening environmental regulations. Researchers presented findings on thermophysical properties of refrigerants and mixtures, lubricant interactions, condensation and boiling heat transfer, and emerging technologies such as elastocaloric cooling. Several sessions also explored the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in thermal systems.

Plenary speakers included Dr. Mark O. McLinden (NIST), Dr. Mark B. Shiflett (University of Kansas), Dr. Claudio Zilio (University of Padova), and Dr. Vikrant C. Aute (University of Maryland), who shared insights into refrigerant thermodynamics, system design, and next-generation heat exchangers.

The programme highlighted research contributions from institutions in Japan, Germany, South Korea, the United States, and other countries. Guided laboratory tours at the University of Maryland offered participants a closer look at current developments in solid-state refrigerants, microfluidic cold plates, and compact thermal systems.

Organised by Dr. Yunho Hwang and Dr. Vikrant Aute, TPTPR2025 fostered international collaboration and knowledge exchange, supporting ongoing innovation in refrigeration science.
