To mark World Ozone Day 2025, a televised session on NTV Kenya showcased the country’s advancements in phasing out ozone-depleting substances and promoting environmentally friendly cooling technologies. The discussion emphasized Kenya’s alignment with the Montreal Protocol and its Kigali Amendment through national policies supporting sustainable refrigeration practices.
The panel featured representatives from Kenya’s Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry (MoECCF), the German development agency GIZ, and the HEVAC Association Kenya. Discussions focused on Kenya's adoption of green cooling technologies, including energy-efficient appliances and systems using natural refrigerants, available on the local market.
GIZ Proklima, in partnership with MoECCF, plays a central role in implementing these initiatives. The programme is funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) under the International Climate Initiative (IKI), and France’s Agence Française de Développement (AFD).
“Transitioning to climate- and environmentally friendly solutions is the only solution,” the panel stated, underlining the importance of the cooling sector in addressing greenhouse gas emissions.
