Nominations open for 2025 J&E Hall Gold Medal award

The Institute of Refrigeration has opened nominations for the 2025 J&E Hall Gold Medal, one of the most internationally recognised awards in the refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump (RACHP) industry. Now in its 48th year, the award includes a £5,000 prize and celebrates practical innovation and technological advancement within the sector.

Sponsored annually by J&E Hall International since 1977, the award is open to individuals or teams whose work demonstrates original and noteworthy contributions to the field. Eligible submissions include practical applications of innovative designs, RACHP technologies and installations that show evidence of successful implementation or significant potential, as well as outstanding work in novel areas of design and installation.

Nominations are accepted globally and must be submitted by 23 October 2025. Entries must be supported by a written statement in English detailing the contribution, along with relevant documentation. Nominations may be made by individuals, organisations or the nominees themselves (with external validation).

The 2024 Gold Medal was awarded to Professor Ahmed Kovacevic of City University for his contribution to compressor technology. His work, combining academic research with industrial collaboration, led to the development of high-fidelity numerical modelling software that has significantly improved the design, efficiency and reliability of rotary positive displacement compressors across various applications.

Previous winners have been recognised for achievements in areas such as liquid air energy storage, sustainable refrigerants, compressor simulation, and low-carbon heating and cooling integration.

The winner will receive the J&E Hall Gold Medal to hold for one year, a solid silver replica engraved with their name, and the £5,000 prize. The award will be presented at the Institute’s Annual Dinner in London.
