Winners of the IIR Scientific Awards 2023

Every four years at its Congress, the IIR offers a series of prestigious Scientific Awards that recognise those who have made outstanding contributions to the field of refrigeration.

The IIR is delighted to announce the winners of its prestigious Scientific Awards.

To be presented this year during the 26th IIR International Congress of Refrigeration (ICR2023) in August in Paris (France), for this edition, the IIR received a record-breaking 37 applications from 15 countries for all of its awards.

A new prize: Women in Refrigeration Award

The Women in Refrigeration Award recognises outstanding scientific achievements, by a woman, in academic or industrial research, innovation or development, in all fields of refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pumps (RACHP).

The winner of the first Women in Refrigeration Award is Laura Fedele (Italy), member of IIR Commission B1 – Thermodynamics and Transfer Processes, for her key work on the discovery and development of materials and systems related to energy saving and efficiency, with the aim of reducing greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions.

Gustav Lorentzen Medal

Named after the prominent Professor, this medal is awarded to a person for remarkable and original achievements in either academic or industrial research, on innovation or development, in all fields of refrigeration, thus promoting creativity and modernisation in the fields of expertise of the IIR.

The Gustav Lorentzen Medal is awarded to Yunho HWANG (USA), President of IIR Commission B1 – Thermodynamics and Transfer Processes, for his pivotal research on energy efficiency and not-in-kind alternative refrigeration technology in the field of refrigeration and air-conditioning (RAC).

Science and Technology Medal

This medal is awarded to a person for significant achievements over an extended period of time in science and/or technology in one of the fields of expertise of the IIR.

The Science and Technology Medal is awarded to Björn Palm (Sweden), member of IIR Commission B1 – Thermodynamics and Transfer Processes, for his scientific contributions in the field of applied thermodynamics, heat transfer, refrigeration and heat pump technologies spanning over the past 40 years.

Medal of Merit

This is a high-level honour for a person with noteworthy achievements who has made exceptional contributions to the IIR, and who also serves as a role model to the younger generations.

This year, the prestigious Medal of Merit goes to:
  • Piotr Domanski (USA), Honorary president of IIR Commission B1 – Thermodynamics and Transfer Processes.
  • Philippe Lebrun (Switzerland), Honorary member of IIR Commission A1 - Cryophysics and Cryoengineering.
The winners of the IIR Young Researchers’ Awards will be announced soon.
