G&D Chillers has chosen Frascold’s Z model semi-hermetic piston compressors for its new Elite 290 chiller series, a propane-based solution recently adopted by New Belgium Brewing. The collaboration supports the industry’s shift toward sustainable refrigeration in North America.
The Elite 290 series uses propane (R290), a natural refrigerant with an almost zero Global Warming Potential (GWP). Already common in Europe and the UK, propane is now gaining ground in the U.S. as environmental regulations push for the reduction of direct and indirect emissions. G&D Chillers aims to position propane at the core of its long-term sustainability strategy.
According to G&D Chillers, the Frascold compressors were selected for their compact design, low noise, and energy efficiency. The compressors are also compatible with a variety of refrigerants, offering flexibility for industrial applications.
Paul Johnson, Technical Director and R&D at G&D Chillers, said: “Thanks to Frascold’s proven expertise in propane applications and the reliability of their Z model compressors, we’ve developed a highly efficient system, reducing the gas charge to just 6 lbs per circuit, which is only 30% of what you’d find in a typical home barbecue. Frascold has proven to be a strategic partner, whose expertise was essential to the successful introduction of our Elite 290 series in the North American market.”
The Elite 290 series is designed to perform in demanding conditions, combining safety with reduced energy consumption. Its introduction reflects the refrigeration industry’s growing focus on low-GWP technologies to meet evolving global standards.
New Belgium Brewing, a certified B Corporation and one of the largest craft breweries in the U.S., is among the first companies to implement the Elite 290 series. The move aligns with the brewery’s aim to certify all brands as carbon neutral by 2030.

With propane refrigeration still relatively new in the U.S. commercial and industrial sectors, the G&D-Frascold partnership marks a notable step in broadening its adoption, delivering energy-efficient systems with minimal environmental impact.
