The UK Ammonia Alliance (UKAA) held its first networking event, bringing together Founding Members, industry leaders, academics, and government representatives at its Winter Social. The event marked a milestone since the Alliance’s launch in October 2025 and focused on the potential of low-carbon ammonia in supporting the UK’s energy security and industrial decarbonisation goals.
UKAA Chair Dr Mike Rendall, Chief Technology Officer at AFC Energy, thanked the community for its engagement and highlighted ammonia’s versatility across sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, defence, and clean energy. “With low-carbon ammonia, we now have an opportunity to decarbonise these sectors and also use ammonia as a low-carbon fuel, hydrogen carrier, and source of clean power,” he said.
The Alliance used the event to preview its strategic agenda for 2026, including the planned publication of its inaugural policy report in the UK Parliament. The report, The UK’s low-carbon ammonia opportunity: eight steps to unlocking innovation, investment and strengthening national security, outlines eight policy recommendations to promote low-carbon ammonia adoption, such as introducing a national production target, extending hydrogen funding mechanisms to ammonia projects, and developing a UK standard for low-carbon ammonia.
Dialogue with UK Government officials and ministers is already underway, with UKAA members committed to sharing R&D evidence and supporting regulatory development. The Alliance aims to position the UK as a global trading hub for low-carbon ammonia, while revitalising domestic production capacity lost in recent years.
Dr Rendall concluded: “We want to make sure that the UK reaps the benefits of this innovation and of the growing ammonia market.”
