Moon Environment Expands Helium Compressor Technology for Cryogenic Systems

Moon Environment is advancing its helium screw compressor technology to support large-scale cryogenic refrigeration systems and scientific research projects in China. The company’s development efforts follow China’s October 2026 breakthrough in domestically developed kilowatt-class superfluid helium refrigeration technology at 2 K.

Since launching collaborative helium compressor research in 2015, Moon Environment has expanded its activities in cryogenic equipment manufacturing. By 2026, the company had undertaken more than 20 helium compressor projects and delivered over 40 units and packages. Its equipment has been deployed in cryogenic research facilities, superconducting magnets, helium liquefaction systems and large-scale scientific facilities.

Moon Environment’s helium screw compressors offer displacement capacities ranging from 100 to 14,000 m³/h (approximately 59 to 8,240 cfm), with a maximum design pressure of 5.2 MPa (approximately 754 psi). The product range supports single-stage and two-stage compression configurations for different flow rates, pressures and operating conditions. Technical features include helium-specific rotor profiles, combined multi-point oil injection and sealing technologies designed to improve efficiency and reduce helium leakage.

The company also uses digitalized production lines, 3D printing and automated control systems to support manufacturing customization and unattended operation. Its compressors are intended for applications including cryogenic refrigeration, superconducting systems, controlled nuclear fusion, quantum computing, liquid hydrogen production and helium recovery from LNG.

Moon Environment has collaborated with Xi’an Jiaotong University, the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Zhongshan Institute of Advanced Cryogenic Technology. A joint project with Xi’an Jiaotong University received First Prize in the 2019 China Machinery Industry Science and Technology Awards. The company plans to increase R&D investment, expand experimental validation capabilities and strengthen research partnerships focused on cryogenic equipment and compression of special working fluids.
