ATMOsphere Japan 2021

The 8th annual ATMOsphere Japan 2021 conference will be held on February 15, 2021.

Despite these uncertain times, ATMOsphere Japan’s mission to advance the business case for natural refrigerants in the Japanese market remains as important as ever.

That’s why this year, we aim to adapt to these unprecedented circumstances and still deliver on an informative and valuable event that will take place in a digital format.

Additional details will be announced in the coming weeks, but rest assured, our team remains as committed to the mission of ATMOsphere Japan as ever. With adaptation and innovation top-of-mind, we aim to serve the industry again in 2021 — which will undoubtedly prove to be the most important year yet for our industry.

Key discussion points in this year’s conference will include:

Policy and Regulatory developments

  • Japan Carbon Neutral by 2050: Japan has committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2050, increasing investment, research and development in green technologies. 2021 is a key year for the HVAC&R industry to reassess and discuss its role in achieving this target.
  • Upcoming F-gas regulation revision: After 5 years, Japan’s F-Gas law has begun the reviewal process this year. Meanwhile, European Union (EU) F-Gas Regulation revisions are also underway and according to a market study by shecco released this November, the EU’s cooling industry supports a more ambitious F-Gas Regulation.
  • The IEC vote and ongoing HC risk assessment are affecting the hydrocarbons market as it expands from the light commercial sector into a wider range of applications in commercial refrigeration.

Rapidly evolving market dynamics

  • Industrial Refrigeration: The installation of large scale CO2 TC systems in the cold storage sector in Japan continues to grow with an additional number of major manufacturers, both domestic and overseas, recently entering the market. Competition with low charge ammonia systems continues to intensify.
  • Hydrocarbons: Hydrocarbon-based solutions are increasingly being deployed in both light commercial and commercial applications. With the emergence of R290 water-loop systems and the successful deployment of plug-in systems by major players, this trend is expected to intensify in 2021.
  • Ongoing subsidies by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment continue to drive the market for NatRefs in commercial and industrial refrigeration applications.
