The II ABRAVA Environment Forum introduced a sector-wide discussion on the next decade of the Kigali Amendment, bringing HVACR industry, government and association representatives together on September 22 at FIESP in São Paulo. The hybrid event focused on refrigerant transition, professional qualification, energy efficiency, refrigerant recovery and recycling, and environmental responsibility across the HVACR chain.
Organized by the National Environment Department of ABRAVA, the Brazilian Association of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, Ventilation and Heating, the forum examined progress since the Kigali Amendment was adopted in 2016. The amendment established commitments under the Montreal Protocol for the gradual reduction of HFC production and consumption.
Refrigerant transition was a central topic, with discussions covering applications including supermarkets and automotive air conditioning. Participants addressed the need to consider equipment, components, installation and maintenance procedures, safety, and refrigerant recovery and recycling alongside the selection of alternative fluids. Professional training was identified as a key requirement for technicians responsible for installation, operation, maintenance, recovery and recycling.
The program included a presentation by André Oliveira of Mastercool on refrigerant recovery, recycling and preservation, with particular attention to the automotive sector. Danilo Gualbino of Solstice addressed Brazil’s position ten years after adoption of the amendment, while Rafael Mattos of Haier discussed the company’s contribution during the period. Darcley Touguinho of Recigases presented on refrigerant maintenance and lifecycle responsibility.
Energy efficiency was also examined as part of the refrigerant transition. Discussions considered the need to assess alternatives to HFCs together with equipment and system energy performance during operation, linking refrigerant choice with technology, maintenance and operating practices.
“The moment is also one of looking at the next decade, with the objective of expanding action against extreme climate events,” said Thiago Pietrobon, Director of Environment at ABRAVA.
