AREA has joined organisations across the buildings and energy ecosystem in calling for the revised EPBD to be implemented effectively and on time. The group said the European Commission’s follow-up on national transposition is an important step towards ensuring that rules agreed at EU level are fully applied across member states.
Buildings account for around 40% of the EU’s final energy consumption and approximately half of its gas consumption. AREA said the EPBD can help reduce energy demand and bills, strengthen European energy security, and support investment and innovation in clean technology and building sectors.
The joint statement stressed that legal transposition alone will not be sufficient. Implementation should include clear guidance, effective compliance and verification mechanisms, adequate administrative capacity, investment in skills, and coordination among national, regional and local authorities and market participants.
AREA and the other signatories called on the European Commission and member states to work together on full transposition and effective implementation. They said citizens, businesses, building owners, professionals and public authorities need clarity and certainty to act.
