Carrier Commercial Refrigeration and GIZ will establish a regional supermarket training center in Kenya

Carrier Commercial Refrigeration, a leading supplier of high-efficiency refrigeration systems and services in the food retail and cold storage industries, is collaborating with the Green Cooling Initiative of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, funded by the International Climate Initiaitve (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), to establish the first carbon dioxide (CO2) transcitical regional supermarket training center in East Africa. This supports Carrier Commercial Refrigeration’s focus on expanding the cold chain, which can help improve health outcomes and reduce hunger, food insecurity and carbon emissions.

Carrier Commercial Refrigeration signed an agreement with GIZ to establish a CO2 transcritical regional supermarket training center in Nairobi, Kenya, and conduct trainings for African trainers and technicians in Kenya, Germany and online. The center will serve as a hub for innovation, education and industry advancement in cold chain solutions. A signing ceremony was held at the World Cold Chain Symposium on Oct. 21 in Nairobi.

“At Carrier Commercial Refrigeration, we take great pride in our role as an industry leader in commercial refrigeration solutions and we are pleased to partner with GIZ to further decarbonization around the globe,” said Marcus Eisenhuth, Vice President & General Manager of Carrier Commercial Refrigeration. “This center will provide comprehensive training using state-of-the-art CO2 technology, equipping professionals with the critical skills needed to optimize their cold chain operations.”

“Setting up the first regional CO2 transcritical supermarket training center in Kenya and providing trainings in cooperation with the local Kenyan partners and Carrier, is an important cornerstone toward the promotion of Green Cooling in Africa and for preparing for the implementation of the Kigali Amendment and the Paris Agreement,” said Philipp Denzinger, project manager of GIZ Proklima.

This innovative initiative further underscores Carrier’s ongoing commitment to advance efficient and sustainable cooling solutions in emerging markets. In August, Carrier Transicold signed an agreement with the Telangana State Trade Promotion Corporation to advance cold chain development and training in India, and, in 2022, Carrier Transicold agreed to develop a cold chain center in Kigali, Rwanda and a world-class Transport Training Centre in Accra, Ghana.
