Europe wins the HVAC World Student Competition

HVAC World Student Competition 2023 was successfully held in Tampa, Florida, during ASHRAE Annual Conference 2023. In this event, the winner of REHVA Student competition 2023, represented REHVA and competed against the representatives of REHVA’s international partners, SAREK (South Korea), CCHVAC (China), and ASHRAE (United States).

The members grade and rank the contestants based on a list of criteria indicated in advance, which quantifies the qualities of the work from many aspects. The four contestants presented their research to the team of Jury (one member per association). After each presentation, the jury members challenged the candidates with their questions, forming a short debate. The competition resulted in 3 winners: Indra Permana (3rd place), Jingjing Pan (2nd place), and Bas Turk (1st place), representing ASHRAE (US), CCHVAC (China), and REHVA (Europe), respectively. 

Bas Turk, the winner of the REHVA student competition, has triumphed once again by securing first place in the HVAC World Student Competition. Turk’s exceptional work titled “Quantifying the potential of overheating countermeasures on a humanitarian shelter through measurements and building performance simulation” made a strong impression at the ASHRAE Annual Conference in Tampa, Florida.

Turk’s journey began with his victory in the national competition organized by TVVL, the Dutch association for building services engineers. This success propelled him to the European level of the REHVA student competition, where his innovative research and dedication earned him the title in May, in Brussels.

Turk’s research focused on addressing overheating issues in humanitarian shelters, an increasingly urgent concern due to climate change. Through meticulous measurements and building performance simulations, he quantified the potential impact of various countermeasures.
