ASERCOM Releases Modbus EDS to Improve Device Interoperability

Standardized digital sheets aim to simplify integration across RACHP systems.

ASERCOM has released the finalized version of the Modbus Electronic Data Sheets (EDS), introducing a standardized approach to describing device data across the refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump (RACHP) industry. The initiative seeks to enhance interoperability and reduce errors in system communication, especially in installations using mixed protocols and hardware.

The Modbus EDS uses a structured JSON format and supports Modbus RTU, ASCII, and TCP/IP. By offering a unified language for describing device parameters and functions, the EDS simplifies integration with Modbus clients, improves system stability, and reduces development costs for equipment manufacturers and integrators.

“The introduction of the Modbus EDS represents a significant milestone in our industry’s journey towards seamless integration and interoperability,” said Marco Masini, President of ASERCOM. “By providing a common description language, we are enabling more efficient and error-free communication between devices, ultimately leading to better performance and reliability in our systems.”

Flexible Use and Future Compatibility

The EDS can be deployed in various ways: embedded directly in a device, hosted on a server, or included in system documentation. This allows existing equipment to adopt the format without firmware updates. ASERCOM also plans continuous updates to the document to ensure compatibility with evolving technical standards and IoT applications.

By minimizing interpretation errors and easing device commissioning, the EDS supports digital transformation and integration into smart buildings and grids, improving energy efficiency and operational control.

Open Access to Support Market Adoption

To accelerate industry adoption, ASERCOM is offering the Modbus EDS document free of charge. “We want to reach as many users and developers as quickly as possible and establish a new de facto standard,” said Matthias Kordon, a lead contributor to the EDS project. “Rapid market penetration makes everyone’s work easier and ensures good interoperability.”

The Modbus EDS is now available for download on ASERCOM’s official website.
