C40 Cities is partnering with Carrier, a leader in climate solutions, to help cities adapt to rising global temperatures through sustainable cooling. A three-year grant of $1.05 million from Carrier will empower C40 to develop cooling solutions that maintain health and safety while aligning with the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C goal.
August 2024 marked the hottest month on record, emphasizing the need for equitable cooling access, especially as one-third of the global population faces life-threatening heat for 20+ days annually. Without sustainable interventions, increased cooling demand could exacerbate climate change.
C40 will use Carrier's funding to help cities assess the impact of heat on health, energy poverty, and cooling demand, developing strategies that align with climate action plans. This initiative is part of C40's broader effort to ensure heat mitigation aligns with the Paris Agreement, focusing on equitable distribution and support for vulnerable communities.
"Cities face unique heat risks," said Mark Watts, C40 Executive Director. "This project will highlight climate leadership by providing sustainable, equitable cooling solutions."
Hakan Yilmaz, Carrier's Senior VP, added, "Public-private partnerships are crucial as temperatures rise. We're excited to partner with C40 to develop effective cooling strategies, continuing our innovation in sustainable technologies for thriving communities."
