Copeland has completed the first phase of its ₹500 crore (approx. USD 60 million) investment at its manufacturing facility in Atit, India. The milestone marks the start of local production of scroll hermetic compressors, making Copeland the only company manufacturing scroll compressors in India. The first batch of 5 HP scroll compressors has been successfully delivered, supporting the Indian government's “Make in India” initiative.
The Atit site plays a key role in reducing reliance on imports as India’s HVACR market is expected to reach USD 45.4 billion by 2033. The facility produces compressors, condensing units, and heat pumps for various applications, including transport segments such as railways, metro systems, and electric buses. It also supports technologies aligned with low-global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants and the country’s sustainable cold chain goals.
Over the past two years, Copeland has added more than 350 SKUs across multiple product categories at the site. Production now includes compressors compatible with low-GWP refrigerants such as R-32, R-290, R-454A, and R-454B.
The company emphasized its commitment to local workforce development. The Atit facility’s manufacturing staff is composed entirely of local employees. Copeland has also launched workshop modules to train workers for future manufacturing and innovation needs.
“India has become a cornerstone of Copeland’s global manufacturing strategy,” said Jagadish Keswani, president of India, Middle East & Africa for Copeland. “Our focus on localization, sustainable refrigerant technology and advanced product platforms demonstrates our commitment to building a future-ready manufacturing ecosystem in India.”
