Corscale is approaching the launch of its inaugural 72MW data center at Gainesville Crossing Data Campus in Virginia, USA, following the successful integrated systems testing (IST) of the newly installed Airedale by Modine cooling solution.
Airedale by Modine collaborated closely with Corsscale and their approved contractors on all aspects of design, installation, and operations to enhance system efficiencies. After all four phases of IST testing received approval, the US commissioning agent appointed by Corscale praised Airedale for exceeding their responsibilities in driving optimization and efficiency gains.
The independent commissioning agent managed the testing and handover process, dividing the schedule into four 18MW data halls for thorough evaluation. Emergency simulations, such as fast-start and sequencer testing, were conducted on fan wall units and chillers to ensure performance under all conditions.
In a fast-start test, power is cut and then restored after 30 seconds by a generator. The uninterruptible power supply (UPS) reinstates the 18MW power feed, while the chiller system must return to full load and dissipate heat buildup from the downtime. Sequencer testing involves ‘failing’ a chiller to ensure the next in line can handle the heat load. Other critical scenarios were also tested and reported back to Corscale and the hyperscale client leasing the data center space. Feedback acknowledged Airedale’s exceptional expertise and commitment to further efficiencies.
Corscale selected Airedale for its innovative chiller economizer technology and deep understanding of the data center industry. The Gainesville Crossing Data Campus features 56 OptiChillTM chillers, 256 AireWallTM fan wall units, and 8 SmartCoolTM computer room air handling units, providing 72 MW of cooling.
Testing began in late 2023, and with all phases now complete, the data center is set to be handed over to Corscale soon.
Nic Bustamante, CTO of Corscale, emphasized Airedale’s technical expertise and commitment, noting their willingness to share knowledge with other contractors to develop an efficient system for clients.
Rob Bedard, General Manager of Airedale by Modine North America, expressed gratitude for the collaborative environment with Corscale. He highlighted the opportunities for enhancing efficiencies and sustainability gains and looks forward to future projects together.
