Daikin Industries Ltd. has received certification from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its 2050 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction goals, officially recognizing them as science-based “Net Zero Targets.” With this approval, Daikin joins a global group of companies committed to aligning their long-term emissions strategies with the Paris Agreement objective of limiting global warming to 1.5°C.
Daikin introduced its “Environment Vision 2050” in 2019, outlining its goal to achieve net zero GHG emissions across the entire product lifecycle and business operations by fiscal year 2050 (April 1, 2049 – March 31, 2050). The latest certification builds on SBTi’s earlier validation of Daikin’s near-term 2030 targets, granted in February 2024.
The certified targets include a 46.2% reduction in Scope 1 emissions compared to fiscal year 2020 (April 1, 2019 – March 31, 2020) by fiscal year 2031. Additionally, Daikin aims to reduce Scope 2 and 3 emissions by 55% per Japanese Yen value added within the same period.
The SBTi, founded by CDP, the UN Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI), and WWF, evaluates corporate climate targets for alignment with scientific consensus.
“Net Zero isn’t a finish line — it’s a new standard,” said Naofumi Takenaka, President & COO of Daikin Industries Ltd. “As a company shaping the future of air and energy, Daikin is designing technologies that turn decarbonisation from aspiration into infrastructure. We are proud to be recognised by the SBTi, whose science-based approach is setting a new global benchmark for credible climate action.”
