European Patent Office upholds Chemours HFO-1234yf process patent

The Chemours Company announced that the Boards of Appeal of the European Patent Office have upheld European Patent EP 2546225, which protects manufacturing processes for the refrigerant HFO-1234yf. According to Chemours, the decision confirms intellectual property protection for the production technology used to manufacture the low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant.

The company said the ruling supports continued access to refrigerants designed to meet climate goals while ensuring protection of proprietary technology related to their production. Chemours noted that it and its Solstice portfolio have made long-term investments to bring HFO-1234yf to market.

Chemours stated that its intellectual property protections related to the technology extend into the mid-2030s. The company also said it remains committed to defending its intellectual property and maintaining its role as an authorized manufacturer and supplier.

Chemours operates what it describes as one of the world’s largest production facilities for HFO-1234yf and said it will continue investing to meet increasing global demand while maintaining its manufacturing, distribution, and product stewardship standards.
