Hanon Systems announced it has surpassed 1 million units in cumulative production of electric compressors using R744 (CO2). The milestone was reached just one and a half years after achieving 500,000 units in January 2024.
The R744 eCompressors are manufactured at Hanon Systems’ plant in Palmela, Portugal, which supplies components for Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform for electric vehicles. The company noted that rising demand for electric vehicles in Europe has driven growth in orders for these compressors.
The company highlighted its history in developing solutions with various refrigerants and was the first in the industry to design an eCompressor using R744 for automotive climate control. In addition to R744, Hanon Systems offers systems with R290 (propane), as well as R134a and R1234yf.
“Hanon Systems continues to drive innovation in automotive thermal management solutions,” said Soo-il Lee, Vice Chairman and CEO of Hanon Systems. “Surpassing 1 million units in R744 electric compressor production is a testament to our leadership in eco-friendly technology and marks a significant milestone in our commitment to a sustainable future.”
The Palmela facility has been in operation since 1988, initially producing mechanical compressors and later introducing electric compressors in 2009.
