Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Danfoss Partner to Curb Data Center Energy Consumption and Reuse Excess Heat

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and Danfoss have announced a collaboration to deliver HPE IT Sustainability Services – Data Center Heat Recovery, an off-the-shelf heat recovery module designed to help organizations manage and utilize excess heat, promoting sustainable IT facilities.

As AI technology adoption accelerates, power demand is expected to increase dramatically. By 2026, the AI industry's electricity consumption is projected to be ten times higher than in 2023. To address these challenges, HPE and Danfoss are introducing a new energy-efficient data center solution that includes:

  • HPE’s Modular Data Center (MDC): Small footprint, high-density containers with direct liquid cooling, reducing energy consumption by 20%.
  • Danfoss’ Heat Reuse Modules: Capture excess heat from data centers for renewable heating onsite and in neighboring buildings, with Turbocor compressors enhancing cooling efficiency by up to 30%.

"Our strategic partnership with HPE revolutionizes and decarbonizes the data center industry," said Jürgen Fischer, President, Danfoss Climate Solutions. "Together, we are building the blueprint for the next generation of sustainable data centers."

Benefits and Agility of Modularity:

  • Enhanced Energy Efficiency: HPE’s MDCs with direct liquid cooling improve energy efficiency by over 20%.
  • Compact and Flexible Design: Reduces energy loss and shortens deployment time from 18 months to as few as 6 months.
  • Reduced Environmental Impact: Minimizes energy impact and supports enhanced data governance and security.

“At HPE, we believe in the power of collaboration to create transformative solutions,” said Sue Preston, Vice President & General Manager, WW Advisory & Professional Services & Managed Services, HPE. “By harnessing waste heat, we turn waste into worth, showcasing the future of energy usage as efficient and intelligent.”

HPE’s modular data centers offer a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.1, supporting demanding workloads like supercomputing and AI. The partnership with Danfoss leverages their extensive product portfolio to drive innovation and support decarbonization.

Danfoss' headquarters in Denmark demonstrates the effectiveness of heat reuse technology, using recovered heat to provide space heating and feeding into the local district heating network, contributing to carbon neutrality.

The new scalable modular data center offering includes Turbocor compressors, heat exchangers, heat reuse modules, and more, cooling data centers up to 30% more efficiently while recovering and reusing excess heat.

As part of its holistic “Reduce, Reuse, Resource” approach, Danfoss also partners with HPE to retire end-of-use IT assets through HPE Asset Upcycling Services, promoting technology refurbishment and reuse while recovering economic value.
