JULABO USA adds LiDAR room scans to app for lab refrigerant safety

JULABO USA said it has updated its smartphone application to integrate LiDAR technology aimed at helping laboratories assess room volume for the safe deployment of liquid temperature control units as the industry transitions to natural refrigerants.

The company said the updated app enables real-time LiDAR scanning to create accurate 3D models of lab spaces, then uses the measurements to generate personalized product recommendations based on lab dimensions and JULABO unit sizing requirements tied to safety protocols.

JULABO USA linked the update to changing environmental regulations in U.S. laboratories, including a 150 g (approx. 5.3 oz) charge limit for importing laboratory refrigeration equipment under UL 60335-2-89. It said natural refrigerants such as CO2 and hydrocarbons can introduce safety considerations due to flammability, and that operating a circulator requires ensuring any potential gas leaks remain below the lower explosion limit (LEL) or lower flammability limit (LFL).

The company said the tool is available on compatible Pro devices with LiDAR capabilities. It also said the app is intended to support end-users and distributors by streamlining pre-sale space planning and product selection, and stated it is the sole competitor offering both a dedicated application and LiDAR capabilities.

“The integration of LiDAR technology into our existing smartphone app marks a significant leap forward for laboratory planning, especially as the industry transitions to natural refrigerants,” said Dr. Dirk Frese, VP of Sales, Marketing & Service. “Safety is paramount to what we do. This innovative feature allows users to create accurate 3D models of their lab spaces, ensuring precise product recommendations that adhere to critical safety requirements.”
