Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Names New CEO, Announces Leadership Changes

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has announced key executive changes, including the appointment of Eisaku Ito as President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective April 1, 2025. Ito will succeed Seiji Izumisawa, who has served as MHI’s top executive for six years and will transition to the role of Chairman of the Board.

The leadership changes were approved during a Board of Directors meeting held in Tokyo and include nominations for Members of the Board to be presented at the company’s 100th Ordinary General Meeting of Shareholders, scheduled for June 27, 2025.

Eisaku Ito’s Career and Vision

Eisaku Ito, currently Executive Vice President, Chief Technology Officer (CTO), and Head of the Technology Strategy Office, has been with MHI for over 30 years. Since 2020, Ito has played a pivotal role in advancing the company’s technological development, digitalization, and AI-driven innovations. He was instrumental in creating the Digital Innovation Headquarters, focusing on streamlining business processes and introducing new products and services.

Upon his appointment, Ito said:

“The reforms enacted by Mr. Izumisawa have further advanced MHI Group's position as a global company. Following the difficulties of the COVID-19 pandemic, both revenue and profit are now at record highs. As we continue to receive strong orders, we will work to build a robust business structure and value chain to reliably deliver products and solutions to our customers.

We will also focus on developing diverse talent and technological infrastructure while promoting digitalization and automation. I am honored to be able to take on the challenge of leading MHI and of joining our Group employees in efforts to optimize the portfolio of businesses, execute our growth strategy, and fulfill our commitments to solve long-term societal challenges - including through MISSION NET ZERO (2040 Carbon Neutrality Declaration) - all with the goal of achieving further growth."

Seiji Izumisawa’s Legacy

Seiji Izumisawa’s tenure as President and CEO saw major organizational milestones, including the restructuring of MHI’s thermal power business and the divestment of its machine tools division. Under his leadership, the company achieved record-high order intake, revenue, and profit in fiscal year 2023, the final year of its 2021 Medium-Term Business Plan. Izumisawa also laid the foundation for future growth in energy transition and defense sectors.

Reflecting on Ito’s appointment, Izumisawa remarked:

“Mr. Ito has deep insight into MHI's core businesses, including gas turbines, and a wide range of technical expertise. Moreover, he has succeeded in resolving many product development issues in the past, and I am confident that his tenacity and leadership will enable MHI to achieve further growth.”

A Focus on Growth and Innovation

With Ito at the helm, MHI aims to continue leveraging its strong business and financial foundation to address societal challenges, including carbon neutrality and national security. The company will prioritize the growth of its core businesses, such as Gas Turbine Combined Cycle (GTCC) systems, nuclear power, and defense, while advancing future-oriented initiatives in digitalization and automation.

These changes underscore MHI's commitment to remaining a global leader in manufacturing and technology.
