Singapore’s largest industrial district cooling system starts operation at ST site

STMicroelectronics and SP Group have launched Singapore’s largest industrial district cooling system at the Ang Mo Kio TechnoPark site, marking a major step in ST’s decarbonization strategy. The system is designed, built, owned, and operated by a joint venture between SP Group and Daikin Airconditioning (Singapore), and aims to reduce ST’s carbon emissions by up to 120,000 tonnes annually.

The district cooling system will also cut cooling-related electricity costs by 20 percent and repurpose over 500,000 cubic meters of reject reverse osmosis water per year that was previously used in cooling towers. Covering approximately 90,000 square meters, the system replaces individual chillers with a centralized closed-loop network supplying chilled water to both manufacturing and office facilities.

With an installed capacity of up to 36,000 refrigeration tonnes (RT), the system uses chillers in series counterflow configuration for efficient 24/7 operations, supported by remote monitoring. ST’s adoption of this system is part of its goal to reach carbon neutrality by 2027.

The installation has freed up 4,000 square meters of space for additional environmental mitigation systems, including perfluorocarbon (PFC) abatement equipment, with future plans for water reclamation and volatile organic compound (VOC) abatement systems. The project also achieved over 2 million accident-free man hours and received the Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy certification from Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority.

ST and SP have also agreed to modernize the cooling system at ST’s Toa Payoh site under a 20-year chilled-water-as-a-service contract. The upgraded system, set to be completed by December 2025, is expected to reduce annual carbon emissions by approximately 2,140 tonnes.

Across both campuses, SP has deployed 2,400 smart electricity meters and multi-utility sensors as part of an energy management information system (EMIS). Smart water meters have also been installed to monitor water usage in five buildings, supporting ST’s efficiency improvements in wafer fabrication processes.

“This achievement strengthens our partnership with Singapore in advancing its national sustainability goals,” said Rajita D’Souza, President of Human Resources and Corporate Social Responsibility at STMicroelectronics.

“District cooling will continue to play a vital role in Singapore’s net-zero ambitions,” added Stanley Huang, Group CEO of SP Group.
