STULZ modular cools supercomputer Emmy

STULZ Modular, a subsidiary of STULZ GmbH, has successfully undertaken the task of cooling the "Emmy" supercomputer at the University of Göttingen.

To support the ongoing development of Emmy, the University, alongside GWDG, required a new data center. Existing facilities were inadequate to provide the necessary space and cooling without significant reconstruction. The entire project was designed and delivered within a tight timeframe, completing the installation of a four-room modular data center in less than two months.

Key Results

1. Efficient Supercomputing Solution:
   - 1.5MW of supercomputing capacity is housed within several STULZ micro data centers, delivering 100kW per rack.
   - The 100kW Micro DCs are accommodated in an 85m² modular data center, utilizing direct liquid-to-chip cooling for CPU heat removal and air cooling for other components. This reduces the risk of thermal shutdown and enables processor overclocking for maximum performance.

2. Additional Data Center Space:
   - A secondary 70m² air-cooled STULZ modular data center was constructed to house network and storage equipment, adjacent to the high-density environment.

3. Energy Savings:
   - Compared to a standard air-cooled data center with a PUE of 1.56, the STULZ modular data center offers a 27% electricity savings at an average 75% load, translating to 3.96 GWh annually.

4. Advanced Cooling Technologies:
   - The cooling system captures 78% of high-density heat through liquid and 22% through air.
   - Prefabrication and modular technology ensured quick deployment within the two-month window, leveraging factory-engineered components for faster and more precise onsite work compared to traditional builds.

5. Environmental Impact:
   - Reduced refrigerant usage by up to 80%, significantly lowering Emmy's CO2 footprint.
   - The data center achieved an annual operating PUE of <1.14, aligning with the University's sustainability goals for energy efficiency.

STULZ Modular's swift and effective deployment reflects their expertise in advanced cooling solutions, ensuring Emmy continues to perform at optimal levels while supporting the University's green initiatives.
