Trane Technologies (USA) and Garrett Motion (Switzerland/USA) have announced a strategic collaboration to advance high-efficiency, oil-free centrifugal compressor technology for commercial HVAC systems. The agreement focuses on developing next-generation compressor solutions to improve energy efficiency and support the use of ultra-low global warming potential refrigerants.
Under the collaboration, Garrett’s high-speed, oil-free centrifugal compressor technology—previously applied in the automotive sector—will be integrated into Trane’s commercial HVAC product portfolio. This includes unitary rooftop units, modular chillers, and large capacity chillers.
Field testing and production of the new technology are scheduled to begin in 2026. The companies aim to improve system-level performance and accelerate the adoption of sustainable HVAC solutions globally.
The partnership includes joint engineering, design, and testing activities, and may extend to exploring smaller capacity systems and distributed cooling applications in the future.
“Garrett Motion brings deep expertise and a shared commitment to quality with their oil-free centrifugal compressor technology. Together, we are accelerating innovation that will shape the next era of sustainable HVAC systems,” said Mauro Atalla, Chief Technology and Sustainability Officer, Trane Technologies.
“Combining this technology proven in several automotive applications with Trane’s system-level leadership enables customers to benefit from a better, more energy-efficient and cost-effective HVAC system while advancing their sustainability goals,” added Olivier Rabiller, President and CEO of Garrett Motion.
