U.S. shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps totaled 408,244 units in December 2025, down 21.4% from 519,326 units shipped in December 2024. Air conditioner shipments decreased 35.9% to 188,715 units, while air-source heat pump shipments decreased 2.4% to 219,529 units.
Year-to-date combined shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps decreased 20.0% to 7,749,529 units, compared with 9,681,770 units shipped during the same period in 2024. Year-to-date shipments of central air conditioners fell 26.2% to 4,104,933 units, and year-to-date heat pump shipments decreased 11.6% to 3,644,596 units.
By capacity band in December 2025, the largest shipment volume was in the 33–38.9 (000) BTUH range at 87,491 units (approx. 9.7–11.4 kW). Other high-volume ranges included 22–26.9 (000) BTUH at 78,473 units (approx. 6.4–7.9 kW) and 27–32.9 (000) BTUH at 55,389 units (approx. 7.9–9.6 kW).
Several higher-capacity December bands showed year-over-year increases, including 185–249.9 (000) BTUH at 1,963 units (+19.6%) (approx. 54.2–73.2 kW) and 540–639.9 (000) BTUH at 253 units (+19.3%) (approx. 158.3–187.5 kW). The month’s total across all listed sizes was 408,244 units.
The figures reflect U.S. manufacturers’ shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps, with totals also reported on a year-to-date basis across the same size categories.
