UNEP OzonAction updates university cooling course in France

UNEP OzonAction has released a complete revision of its university-level course for students pursuing careers involving cooling technologies. The revised course is intended to help undergraduate engineering students apply new technologies to environmental challenges, with a focus on ozone depletion, global warming and international environmental treaties. ASHRAE updated the course as part of its partnership plan with UNEP, with attention to the needs of engineering students in developing countries.

Environmental Challenges & New Cooling Technologies Solutions is available as a downloadable course pack with lecture materials, PowerPoints, assignments, group projects, exams and reference lists. The course is designed for a full semester of 14 to 15 weeks. According to the source, the revision places greater emphasis on project-based learning through class discussions, group projects and case studies in addition to lectures and exams, in response to increased student access to artificial intelligence.

Originally developed in 2018 with funding from UNEP OzonAction, the updated course covers technology options for ozone-safe and energy-efficient cooling. It reviews the proper use of refrigerants with lower global warming potential and discusses the Cascade Refrigeration Cycle, Absorption Refrigeration Cycle, Solar Applications in Refrigeration, Adsorption Refrigeration Cycle, Direct and Indirect Evaporative Cooling, and Radiative Cooling. The ASHRAE Foundation provided financial support for the revision.

The course may be used in whole or in part at no cost to instructors. UNEP OzonAction and ASHRAE said the download is available through the ASHRAE UNEP Portal, which also includes other joint products and activities from the partnership.

Download the instructor course pack with syllabus in the ASHRAE UNEP Portal at www.ashrae.org/unep-university.
