Updated Guide Offers Insights for Transition to R290 Split Air Conditioners

GIZ Proklima and the German Environment Agency have released an updated edition of the R290 Split AC Resource Guide, aiming to support the transition toward environmentally friendly and energy-efficient split air conditioners using propane (R290) as a refrigerant.

Originally published in 2019, the guide has been revised to reflect recent technological developments and policy changes. It provides technical, regulatory, and market-related information tailored for stakeholders involved in manufacturing, installing, and regulating air conditioning systems.

The updated guide highlights that single-split room ACs using R290 offer strong environmental benefits. These include good energy performance and a global warming potential (GWP) close to zero. According to the publishers, this positions R290 as a viable refrigerant for future-proof residential and light commercial systems, especially under the HFC phase-down goals set by the Kigali Amendment.

However, the guide also outlines ongoing challenges that slow the adoption of R290-based systems. These include safety concerns related to the flammability of propane, a general lack of awareness of the technology, and gaps in knowledge regarding manufacturing, installation, and disposal procedures.

To address these issues, the guide is structured to support three main audiences:

  • Policy makers, who require a deeper understanding of R290 systems to make informed decisions on refrigerant and energy-efficiency regulations.

  • Standardization and certification bodies, responsible for developing performance and safety standards and defining the skills required for technicians.

  • Industry stakeholders, including manufacturers, contractors, and service companies looking to transition toward or expand their involvement with R290 technology.

Each chapter concludes with references for further reading, aiming to close knowledge gaps and support capacity-building across the supply chain.
