U.S. shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps totaled 840,769 units in June 2025, a decrease of 22.2% compared to 1,080,817 units in June 2024, according to data from the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI). Air conditioner shipments fell 26.3% to 477,270 units, while heat pump shipments dropped 16.0% to 363,499 units.
For the first half of 2025, combined shipments of central air conditioners and heat pumps reached 4,577,141 units, down 3.0% from 4,716,531 units in the same period of 2024. Year-to-date air conditioner shipments declined 8.1% to 2,500,254 units. In contrast, heat pump shipments rose 4.0% to 2,076,887 units.
By capacity category, June shipments showed declines across most segments. Units in the 16.5–21.9 thousand BTUH range recorded the largest drop at 48.8% year-on-year. Increases were reported in a few commercial categories, including 185–249.9 thousand BTUH (+20.0%), 320–379.9 thousand BTUH (+11.3%), and 380–539.9 thousand BTUH (+30.1%).
AHRI noted that BTUHs of 64.9 thousand and below are classified as residential units, while 65.0 thousand BTUH and above are considered commercial. The association stated that the data is based on reports from member companies participating in its statistics program and may be subject to revision.
