Wieland has commenced a major modernization project at its East Alton, Illinois, facility, marking a $500 million investment aimed at expanding production capabilities and enhancing operational efficiency. The initiative includes the installation of a state-of-the-art hot rolling mill, reinforcing the company’s commitment to technological advancement and sustainability.
"This investment positions Wieland as the undisputed leader in North American rolled products and underscores our commitment to the revitalization of American manufacturing," said Dr. Erwin Mayr, CEO of the Wieland Group.
The modernization will improve the production of copper and copper alloy components essential to industries such as automotive, defense, and energy infrastructure. The upgrade is expected to strengthen Wieland’s role as a domestic supplier of high-quality materials.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker praised the investment, stating, “This more efficient and modern facility will be a beacon of the power of private-public partnership, innovation, and understanding of the needs of the changing 21st-century economy.”
Greg Keown, President of Wieland’s Business Unit Rolling & Recycling, acknowledged the efforts of state and local leaders, including Governor Pritzker, Deputy Governor Andy Manar, Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, and Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski, in making the project possible.
The modernization work has already begun and is scheduled for completion by mid-2028.
