Carrier has launched a new high-efficiency model in its Super Multi u variable refrigerant flow (VRF) series in Japan, featuring an industry-first voluntary certified performance rating for air-cooled package AC systems. The model, introduced in 2025 as part of the Super Multi u R32 series, is designed to reduce energy consumption in commercial buildings and support building owners’ decarbonization efforts.
The launch comes as Japan tightens building energy-efficiency requirements under the Building Energy Index (BEI) framework. Energy-efficiency compliance became mandatory for most new buildings in 2025, and additional requirements introduced in April 2026 tightened thresholds for primary energy performance, especially for medium- to large-scale non-residential buildings. According to the Japanese government, air conditioning systems account for approximately 60% of equipment-related energy consumption in medium-sized non-residential buildings.
Carrier Japan said the new model helps improve BEI performance while reducing design and planning burdens for architects and building owners. The company said its high-efficiency rotary compressors deliver strong part-load efficiency, which was instrumental in Carrier Japan becoming the first VRF manufacturer to obtain voluntary certified performance ratings under the new BEI framework.
The voluntary rating system was institutionalized in Japan in 2025 to evaluate the part-load performance of air-cooled packaged air conditioning systems, based on assessments by third-party organizations designated by the Japanese government. Carrier Japan obtained a voluntary rating certificate after performance evaluation by an authorized third-party institution, allowing BEI calculations to incorporate the certified equipment’s part-load characteristics.
“With its small footprint and voluntary performance certification, this new high-efficiency model is designed to help architects and consultants navigate increasingly complex BEI requirements with greater confidence and efficiency, while easing installation and planning constraints,” said Mineo Maruyama, President & CEO, Carrier Japan. “By translating advanced energy performance into practical value for our customers, it reflects our firm commitment to supporting Japan’s transition toward a carbon-neutral society by 2050.”
