Emerson launches new Copeland 110cc variable speed scroll compressor

Emerson’s new Copeland variable speed scroll compressor and inverter drive solution deliver high energy efficiency and performance for commercial AC applications.

Emerson announces the launch of its new Copeland 110cc variable speed scroll compressor and 36kW inverter drive solution; both manufactured in China and available for global distribution. These new products are engineered to help save energy and provide environmentally friendly improvements for a broad range of commercial air-conditioning applications including chillers, data centers and package air conditioners.

Driven by increasing temperatures and rising demand, the total usages of air conditioners in the Southeast Asian region can skyrocket from 40 million units in 2017 to 300 million units in 2040 and could be responsible for as much as 30% share in the region’s peak demand.[1] In order to align sustainable energy plans with the Paris Agreement and fight global climate change, Green Building guidelines and codes that promote the use of energy-efficient air-conditioning components and systems  in commercial buildings are fast advancing in many countries.

This means that original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of commercial air-conditioning systems face fast-evolving and stringent requirements and are being challenged to provide air-conditioning systems that meet these standards. If planned and executed properly, it will help contribute to Southeast Asia region’s target of generating 50% share of decarbonized electricity by 2030 and 100% by 2050.[2]

Anticipating these requirements, Emerson has developed an integrated compressor technology solution that helps OEMs create commercial air-conditioning systems that enhance human health and protect the environment. The new Copeland 110cc variable speed scroll compressor and 36kW inverter drive solution deliver up to 30%[3] reduction in power consumption over conventional fixed-speed technology. Compatible with multiple refrigerants, including R32, an environmentally-responsible refrigerant, Emerson’s integrated variable speed solution helps enable air-conditioning OEMs meet energy regulations and building owners to meet future commercial building trends without sacrificing performance.

“Emerson has invested heavily in the Asia-Pacific region with the opening of the research and solutions center in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, where our engineers strive to design efficient and reliable environmental-friendly cooling systems.  2021 marks the 100th anniversary for Copeland, a testament of our commitment to provide best-in-class solutions to solve the toughest air conditioning challenges. The Copeland™ 110cc variable speed scroll compressor and 36kW inverter drive are front and center in this endeavor,” said Abel Gnanakumar, Vice President of Air-Conditioning & Business Development, Asia, Middle East & Africa, Emerson. “Collaborating with our OEM customers, we engineered the new product with innovative designs, consisting of 15 technology patents, to deliver superior efficiency and reliability.”

Emerson’s new Copeland 110cc variable speed scroll compressor is designed to deliver outstanding part load and full-peak load performance, enabling OEMs to meet regulatory energy efficiency standards. A tandem configuration of variable speed and fixed speed compressors allows OEMs the flexibility to expand the range and strike the best balance of efficiency and cost. The Copeland 110cc variable speed scroll compressor is coupled with a perfectly matched 36kW inverter drive, enabling our customers to meet shorter development time and achieve cost savings.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Copeland brand which began when inventor Edmund Copeland started a U.S. manufacturing business for refrigeration compressors. Emerson acquired Copeland in 1986 and made significant investments in the development of its flagship scroll technology. The first scroll compressor was introduced under the Copeland brand in 1987, ultimately revolutionizing the air conditioning and refrigeration industries worldwide with a family of compressors known for highly efficient, reliable performance. Emerson remains committed to the continuous innovation of Copeland technology – from research and development, design and engineering, to advanced testing and manufacturing at innovation centers and plant locations across the globe. Emerson today designs and manufactures Copeland solutions in the United States, China and several other countries to meet the unique needs of each regional market.
