Enex Technologies launches R290 Indirect System for industrial refrigeration

Enex Technologies has introduced its R290 Indirect System, a modular refrigeration solution using natural refrigerants, aimed at food storage and processing facilities with cooling demands of up to 1 MW.

The system combines R290 (GWP=0.02) and, for low temperature applications, CO2 (GWP=1), both compliant with F-gas regulations and free of PFAS. The company highlights its design features, including low refrigerant charge per circuit, ease of installation via a hydronic setup, and subcritical CO2 operation. The R290 Indirect System can deliver brine temperatures down to -15°C (5°F) and function in ambient temperatures up to 48°C (118.4°F).

Enex states the unit can replace existing HFC/HFO chillers and operate fully outdoors, even in areas with noise constraints. It also provides high-temperature hot water up to 77°C (170.6°F) for applications including defrost, heating, drying, and sanitation.

“With our 4-pipe system and high-temperature hot water production above 70°C, we’re delivering real, tangible advantages that competitors simply can’t match,” said Massimiliano Sfragara, Product Management Director at Enex Technologies. “These features enable precise humidity control and simultaneous heating and cooling, critical for multi-evaporator cold rooms, while also eliminating the need for traditional boilers.”

Enex references a 2024 report by the Nordic Council of Ministers, which found that switching to natural refrigerants in food processing can reduce energy consumption by up to 30% and cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 50% compared to traditional HFC systems.

The company supports the R290 Indirect System with technical services across Europe, including remote monitoring, maintenance, and training. It also integrates components produced in-house, such as aircoolers and brine coolers, including units designed for IQF and spiral freezers.
