Mitsubishi Electric has announced the phase-out of its Ecodan R32 heat pump series, which will be replaced by an extended range of Ecodan R290 models. The move supports the company’s ongoing focus on low-carbon heating technologies for residential applications.
The Ecodan R290 series, initially launched in October 2023 with 5 kW and 6 kW units, was expanded in April to include 8.5 kW, 10 kW, and 12 kW models. These additions aim to serve larger homes and buildings with higher heat demand.
Manufactured in the UK and carrying Quiet Mark certification, the R290 units use propane (R290) refrigerant, which has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 0.02. The range delivers flow temperatures up to 75°C and is compatible with existing microbore pipework, offering installation flexibility without major system changes.
According to Mitsubishi Electric, the Ecodan R290 heat pumps operate efficiently in temperatures as low as -25°C and are designed for new builds as well as retrofit installations where building envelope upgrades are not feasible.
“Our Ecodan R32 range helped raise the bar for low-carbon heating, and we’re proud of the role it has played in supporting the UK’s decarbonisation efforts,” said Joanna Crown, Product Marketing Manager at Mitsubishi Electric. “The expanded range of Ecodan R290 heat pumps is designed to meet both future performance expectations and regulatory demands, while continuing to provide the quality and reliability that homeowners and installers expect.”
