Türkiye webinar highlights PFAS concerns and Kigali compliance in cooling sector

On 14 May 2025, Cool Up held a webinar examining the environmental risks of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) and their implications for climate-friendly cooling technologies in Türkiye.

Titled “Why Refrigerant Choice Matters – Complying with the Kigali Amendment and Avoiding Environmental Harm Caused by ‘Forever Chemicals’”, the event was organized in cooperation with UNDP Türkiye and Öko-Recherche. The session focused on aligning Türkiye's cooling sector with Kigali Amendment goals while mitigating PFAS-related risks.

Zeynep Gökçen Asan of UNDP Türkiye presented Cool Up’s demonstration projects using natural refrigerants. Dr. Kadir Isa of SOSIAD discussed refrigerant selection in light of PFAS regulations, considering both national and EU perspectives. Prof. Michael Kauffeld of Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences described PFAS as the third major environmental challenge after ozone depletion and global warming, stressing the role of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) as a significant concern.

Sinisa Prodanovic of Öko-Recherche shared updates on EU legislation addressing PFAS and its expected impact on the refrigeration and air conditioning sector.

The webinar ended with a Q&A session, underlining the need for cooperation and innovation to advance sustainable cooling solutions.
