Rivacold has introduced ADAPTIX, a patented technology designed to improve the year-round energy efficiency of R744 transcritical refrigeration systems. The technology continuously adjusts operating parameters according to ambient conditions and cooling demand, with theoretical energy savings of up to 30% when used independently and up to 40% when combined with ejectors.
ADAPTIX integrates a high-efficiency heat exchanger, a three-way regulating valve, temperature and pressure sensors, and Rivacold’s RIV-EVO electronic controller. The system optimizes discharge pressure and evaporation temperature to reduce compressor energy consumption. It can also enable very low superheat, potentially reducing ice formation and defrost cycles.
According to Rivacold’s theoretical estimates for medium-temperature R744 transcritical systems, ADAPTIX can deliver savings of up to 30% across summer, mid-season and winter conditions. Combined with an ejector, the estimated savings reach up to 40% in summer and 30% in other seasons. Actual performance depends on system configuration, operating conditions, refrigeration load and climate.
Initial field testing at a supermarket in Central Italy recorded net energy savings of 18–22% on a 32 kW (approximately 109,000 BTU/h) medium-temperature Rivacold TX system. Operating since June 2026, the installation was evaluated through alternating 24-hour periods with ADAPTIX enabled and disabled. These preliminary results apply only to the tested installation.
ADAPTIX will be offered as an option for selected Rivacold R744 product families, including UNICA R744 (10 HP only), MH2X, ICO₂NA, TX COMPACT4 and TX. Installation requires Rivacold equipment with refrigeration capacity above 13 kW (approximately 44,400 BTU/h). Retrofitting may be possible following a system assessment. Rivacold estimates payback periods ranging from less than one year for a 146 kW system to approximately two years for a 15 kW system, based on assumed annual energy savings of 20% and electricity costs of €0.22/kWh.
Availability for compatible standard products is planned for 2027, while selected special products and custom installations may be offered from late 2026. ADAPTIX can also operate alongside parallel compression, ejectors and two-stage systems.
