France bans gas boilers in new buildings from 2027

The plan targets one million heat pump installations by 2030 and will support households replacing gas- and oil-fired boilers.

France bans gas boilers in new buildings from 2027

France will ban the installation of gas boilers in new buildings from January 1, 2027, as part of a broader strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The measure was presented by the French prime minister on April 10, 2026, amid rising energy prices and a national push toward electrification.

In the housing sector, the government also plans to phase out gas heating in two million social housing units by 2050 and install one million heat pumps by 2030. As a result, gas boilers will no longer be allowed in new construction from the end of 2026.

Public financial support for households will be offered to help replace gas- and oil-fired boilers with heat pumps. According to the French government, the measures are expected to reduce heating costs.

By 2030, a total of 85 terawatt-hours of gas is expected to be replaced by energy produced in France, equivalent to 20% of French gas imports, the government said. Further details of the measures are available on the French government’s website.
