Europastry to Open -22°C Cold Storage Facility in Spain in 2027

The 8,937m² project will link Catalan production with global markets, using insulated cold rooms and a 1,000kWp rooftop solar system.

Europastry to Open -22°C Cold Storage Facility in Spain in 2027

Europastry will open a new frozen food logistics facility at Goodman’s Barcelona City Hub in Spain in 2027. The building will be the first new development at the former Nissan automotive site in Barcelona’s Zona Franca, supporting the company’s distribution operations between its production plants in Catalonia and international markets.

The purpose-built facility will cover 8,937 m² (96,197 sq ft), including 7,403 m² (79,685 sq ft) of frozen storage maintained at -22°C (-7.6°F). It will feature temperature-controlled handling areas operating between 5°C and 10°C (41°F to 50°F), 502 m² (5,403 sq ft) of office space and a clear internal height of 14.6 m (47.9 ft). Storage capacity will extend up to six pallets high.

The cold rooms will use a box-in-box design, creating thermally independent enclosures with continuous insulation to maintain the required temperatures. The development will also incorporate materials and construction solutions intended to reduce carbon emissions. A rooftop photovoltaic system of approximately 1,000 kWp will generate electricity for Europastry under a power purchase agreement with Goodman.

The facility forms part of Goodman’s 144,000 m² (approximately 1.55 million sq ft) multi-sector Barcelona City Hub development. Goodman was awarded the former Nissan site in February 2023 and has committed €123 million (approximately US$142 million) to its redevelopment. The site is located near the Port of Barcelona, with access to the B-10 and C-31 roads.

“Our new facility at Goodman’s Barcelona City Hub will allow us to keep improving the service we offer our customers and strengthen the connection between our production plants in Catalonia and international markets. Its strategic location close to the Port of Barcelona and the bespoke design of the facility will make our logistics operations more efficient and support Europastry’s international growth,” said Marta Minguell, Group Supply Chain Director at Europastry.

Case Study – Effect of Louvers or diffusers on air flow distribution and cooling time on a meat log during Chill cycle

By Kushal Aurangabadkar An experimental analysis was conducted on a cooler space measuring 3.66 m × 6.096 m (12.0 ft × 20.0 ft), equipped with an ammonia refrigeration coil, five 30 cm (12 in.) fans, and five diffusers. The study measured airflow patterns, cooling rates, and heat transfer efficiency in meat storage by testing two configurations:

Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for Modular Refrigeration Systems in Life Sciences Distribution Centers

by Ramez Naguib, P.E. Introduction Life sciences distribution centers are under immense pressure to deliver consistent temperature control, comply with increasingly stringent regulations, and optimize operational efficiency. Traditional built-up refrigeration systems often prove cumbersome, costly, and slow to implement. In contrast, modular, factory-assembled refrigeration systems have emerged as a compelling alternative. Drawing on lessons from
