Carrier Introduces R-290 High-Temperature Heat Pump for Sustainable Heating

Carrier Introduces R-290 High-Temperature Heat Pump for Sustainable Heating
Carrier has launched the AquaSnap 61AQ, a high-temperature air source reversible heat pump for commercial applications that uses R-290, a natural refrigerant with an ultra-low Global Warming Potential (GWP). The system is designed to deliver heating up to 75°C, even in outdoor temperatures as low as -7°C, and operates efficiently in extreme conditions down to -25°C.

The AquaSnap 61AQ is tailored for diverse applications, including healthcare facilities and collective housing, integrating with building systems to reduce environmental impact. Available in a monobloc version with capacities from 40 to 140 kW, the system also offers a modular option that allows up to four units to be connected, extending the capacity range to 560 kW.

Carrier has developed this unit in response to stricter regulations, including the F-Gas directive, aiming to support decarbonisation efforts in heating. The use of R-290, which has a GWP of 0.02 according to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, aligns with evolving environmental standards. To ensure safe operation, Carrier has implemented robust safety measures, such as enclosing refrigerant components in a dedicated insulated compartment and offering training programmes for handling R-290.

The AquaSnap 61AQ exceeds Ecodesign efficiency requirements by up to 30% and incorporates features such as an advanced inverter compressor and noise-reduction technology, limiting noise levels to 78 dB(A), which is 10 dB(A) lower than Ecodesign recommendations.

Didier Genois, Vice President and General Manager of Carrier Commercial HVAC, EMEA, stated: “The AquaSnap 61AQ is more than a product, it’s a milestone for Carrier. By introducing R-290 to high-temperature commercial heating, we are addressing critical decarbonisation challenges head-on. This heat pump exemplifies Carrier’s vision for a sustainable future, combining superior performance with unmatched environmental responsibility.”

Andrew Paddock, Managing Director of Carrier Commercial HVAC, UK&I and Nordics, added: “The AquaSnap 61AQ is another leading example of Carrier creating solutions to meet its customers’ most pressing challenges. This new solution will empower businesses to reduce their carbon footprint while meeting rigorous operational demands.”

The unit also features digital connectivity through Carrier’s Abound HVAC Performance platform, providing real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance. This capability helps ensure fast, accurate diagnostics and repairs, reducing downtime and enhancing system reliability.
