Carrier Transicold launches all-electric Vector 8200 TRU in US

Carrier Transicold has launched the Vector 8200, an all-electric, engineless transport refrigeration unit (TRU) for stationary trailer cold storage. Available through the company’s North American dealer network, the unit supports single- and multi-temperature operation without a diesel engine.

The Vector 8200 uses grid electricity or other external power sources. Its TRU-Demand E-Drive energy management system monitors power draw and adjusts to changes in a facility’s electrical supply, maintaining voltage during brownouts and helping prevent grid strain when multiple units restart after power outages. Carrier Transicold says it is the company’s first engineless TRU with multi-temperature capability, with four remote evaporator options for one-, two- or three-compartment trailers.

Cooling capacity reaches 58,000 BTU/hr (approx. 17 kW) at 35°F (approx. 2°C), 33,500 BTU/hr (approx. 9.8 kW) at 0°F (-18°C) and 22,000 BTU/hr (approx. 6.4 kW) at -20°F (-29°C). The unit also provides electric heating and defrost while connected to shore power.

The Vector 8200 includes APX controls with IntelliSet and ProductShield temperature-control technology, a DataLink temperature data recorder and Lynx Fleet telematics for monitoring and two-way control. Components include a hermetic electric scroll compressor, microchannel condenser, AC fan motors, electronic expansion valve, 40-amp battery charger and TRU-mounted solar charging system. Options include a liftgate battery charger and custom paint.

“Customers need reliable temperature control whether they’re holding product at 35°F or -20°F, and they need it without TRU engine noise or direct emissions at their facility,” said Greg Turner, Associate Director, Trailer Product Management, Carrier Transicold. “The Vector 8200 gives them an intelligent all-electric solution for single- or multi-temperature on-site cold storage that doesn’t use diesel fuel and actively manages power demand.”

The launch comes 20 years after Carrier Transicold introduced the Vector platform with E-Drive. Carrier notes that the engineless Vector 8200 produces no direct emissions, although indirect emissions and refrigerant leaks are possible.
